Asian Hall Table

This black walnut hall table has an Asian feel to it. It was an opportunity to create a design that was light and airy, in spite of using a dark wood. It was also a fun opportunity to use very small through tenons as accent moments. The slender legs are canted out by a few degrees that not only lend stability, but also give it a greater feel of solidity than it would have otherwise.

Here you can see the through tenons, as well as the way that the table top was attached so that it looks like it floats above the legs and skirt. By doing it this way, it creates that sense of light airiness that makes it seem to float. The dimensions are 13″ deep X 48″ long and a bit less than 32″ high. Another small detail is the ends of the top that have a slight curve to them, further adding to the light feel. Some pieces need to be built and feel solid and sturdy. Some can be delicate and fun. This hall table offered me the opportunity to explore the latter design direction.
