Japanese Country Bar Stools

(click in images to enlarge)

We remodeled our kitchen recently with clean, modern, painted cabinets and tiled backsplashes. At the extended countertop on the island, we needed a couple of bar stools. Our home is a lovely mix of Japanese and Southwestern architecture. While much Japanese woodworking is created with exquisite joinery and is stunning in its details, I wanted to make the stools more homey and comfy with solid joinery and simple lines. Small details, such as wedged tenons where the legs join the seat, offer a bit of contrast and catch your attention.

The stools retain the Japanese look of the home, but their rustic simplicity creates something a country style. They fit perfectly under the countertop and are very comfortable. Guests can now sit at the counter, enjoy a snack and beverage while we work preparing food for a gathering.
